Of paths, the eightfold is best.
Of truths, the four sayings.
Of qualities, dispassion.
Of two-footed beings,
	the one with the eyes
	to see.

	Eso-va maggo natth-a~n~no dassanassa visuddhiyaa
Eta.m hi tumhe pa.tipajjatha maarass-eta.m pamohana.m. 
	

Eta.m hi tumhe pa.tipannaa dukkhassanta.m karissatha
Akkhaato ve mayaa maggo a~n~naaya sallasatthana.m. 


Tumhehi kicca.m aatappa.m akkhaataaro tathaagataa
Pa.tipannaa pamokkhanti jhaayino maarabandhanaa. 

Ðường nầy, không nẻo khác,
Khiến thanh tịnh tri kiến
Hãy theo chánh đạo nầy
Làm ác ma đảo điên
	

Hãy theo chánh đạo nầy
Người sẽ chấm dứt khổ
Con đường ta công bố
Ðoạn khổ chướng bằng trí


Các con phải tinh cần
Chư Phật chỉ hướng dẫn
Người thực hành thiền định
Thoát thằng thúc ma quân

	Just this
	is the path
 — there is no other —
to purify vision.
	Follow it,
and that will be Mara's
	bewilderment.
	

Following it,
you put an end
to suffering & stress.
I have taught you this path
having known
 — for your knowing —
the extraction of arrows.

It's for you to strive
	ardently.
Tathagatas simply
point out the way.
Those who practice,
absorbed in jhana:
	from Mara's bonds
	they'll be freed.

Sabbe sa'nkhaaraa aniccaa-ti 
yadaa pa~n~naaya passati
Atha nibbindati dukkhe 
esa maggo visuddhiyaa.

When you see with discernment,
'All fabrications are inconstant' —
you grow disenchanted with stress.
	This is the path
	to purity.

'All fabrications are stressful' —
you grow disenchanted with stress.
	This is the path
	to purity.
	
When you see with discernment,
'All phenomena are not-self' —
you grow disenchanted with stress.
	This is the path
	to purity.

U.t.thaanakaalamhi anu.t.thahaano 

Yuvaa balii aalasiya.m upeto

Sa.msannasa'nkappamano kusiito

Pa~n~naaya magga.m alaso na vindati

Không nỗ lực, tinh cần
Tuổi trẻ khỏe lại lười,
Chí, trí cùng thụ động,
Trí tuệ sao phát sanh.

At the time for initiative
he takes no initiative.
Young, strong, but lethargic,
the resolves of his heart
	exhausted,
the lazy, lethargic one
loses the path
to discernment.

Vaacaanurakkhii manasaa susa.mvuto
Kaayena ca akusala.m na kayiraa 
Ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye
Aaraadhaye magga.m isippavedita.m.

Thân không được làm ác,
Khéo giữ ý giữ lời,
Thường thanh tịnh ba nghiệp,
Ðạt đạo thánh nhân thôi.

	Guarded    in speech,
well-restrained in mind,
you should do nothing unskillful
	       in body.
	Purify
these three courses of action.
	Bring to fruition
the path that seers have proclaimed.

Yogaa ve jaayati bhuuri ayogaa bhuurisa'nkhayo
Eta.m dvedhaa patha.m ~natvaa bhavaaya vibhavaaya ca
Tathattaana.m niveseyya yathaa bhuuri pava.d.dhati.

Tu thiền trí tuệ sanh.
Bỏ thiền trí tuệ diệt.
Ðược mất khéo phân biệt,
Biết rõ đường chánh tà,
Tự nỗ lực theo đà,
Trí tuệ dần tăng trưởng

From striving comes wisdom;
from not, wisdom's end.
Knowing these two courses
 — to development,
	   decline —
conduct yourself
so that wisdom will grow.

Vana.m chindatha maa rukkha.m vanato jaayatii bhaya.m
Chetvaa vana~nca vanatha~nca nibbanaa hotha bhikkhavo. 

Yaava.m vanatho na chijjati anumatto-pi narassa naarisu
Pa.tibaddhamano-va taava so vaccho khiirapako-va maatari

Ucchinda sinehamattano kumuda.m saaradika.m-va paa.ninaa
Santimaggameva bruuhaya nibbaa.na.m sugatena desita.m.

Ðốn rừng chớ đốn cây,
Vì rừng gây sợ hãi.
Nên đốn rừng tham ái,
Tỳ kheo, hãy ly tham

Bao lâu chưa đoạn tuyệt,
Ái dục giữa gái trai,
Tâm tư đeo đuổi hoài,
Như bê con theo mẹ

Hãy cắt tiệt ái dục,
Như tay ngắt sen thu.
Ðạo tịch tịnh gắng tu,
Bậc Thiện Thệ dạy vậy

Cut down
the forest of desire,
not the forest of trees.
From the forest of desire
come danger & fear.
Having cut down this forest
& its underbrush, monks,
	be deforested.

	
For as long as the least
bit of underbrush
of a man for women
is not cleared away,
the heart is fixated
	like a suckling calf
	on its mother.


Crush
your sense of self-allure
	like an autumn lily
	in the hand.
Nurture only the path to peace
	— Unbinding —
as taught by the One Well Gone.

Idha vassa.m vasissaami idha hemantagimhisu
Iti baalo vicinteti antaraaya.m na bujjhati

Ta.m puttapasusammatta.m byaasattamanasa.m nara.m
Sutta.m gaama.m mahogho-va maccu aadaaya gacchati.

Mùa mưa ta ở đây,
Hè thu ta ở đây.
Kẻ ngu si nghĩ vậy,
Nào đâu thấy hiểm nguy

Người ham nhiều con cái,
Thích súc vật dư thừa,
Tử thần sẽ kéo bừa,
Như lụt cuốn làng ngủ.

'Here I'll stay for the rains.
Here, for the summer & winter.'
So imagines the fool,
unaware of obstructions.


That drunk-on-his-sons-&-cattle man,
all tangled up in the mind:
death sweeps him away —
	as a great flood,
	a village asleep.

Na santi puttaa taa.naaya na pitaa n-api bandhavaa
Antakenaadhipannassa natthi ~naatisu taa.nataa

Etamatthavasa.m ~natvaa pa.n.dito siilasa.mvuto
Nibbaa.nagamana.m magga.m khippameva visodhaye 

Con cái nào chở che,
Mẹ cha nào o bế,
Thân thích nào bảo vệ,
Khi bị thần chết lôi.

Hiểu rõ sự lý trên,
Bậc trí nên trì giới,
Khai sáng đường đi tới,
Trực chỉ đến Niết bàn.

There are   no sons
	to give shelter,
	   no father,
	   no family
for one seized by the Ender,
	no shelter among kin.


  Conscious
of this compelling reason,
the wise man, restrained by virtue,
should make the path pure
	— right away —
that goes all the way to Unbinding.
