[Ananda:]

1024.
Ta nhận từ đức Phật,
Tám mươi hai ngàn pháp,
Còn nhận từ Tỷ-kheo,
Thêm hai ngàn pháp nữa,
Tổng cộng tám tư ngàn,
Là pháp ta chuyển vận.


        

1025. Who nothing has heard and nothing understood,
He ages only oxen-like:
His stomach only grows and grows,
But his insight deepens not.

1025. Người ít nghe ít học,
Lớn già như con bò,
Những thịt nó lớn lên,
Trí tuệ nó không lớn.

1026. Who has much heard and learned,
But does despise him who is poor in learning,
Is like one blind who holds a lamp.
So must I think of such a one.

1026. Người học nhiều khinh miệt,
Kẻ học ít về học,
Như người mù mang đèn,
Ta có ý là vậy.

1027. Thou follow him who has heard much,
Then what is heard shall not decline.
This is the tap-root of the holy life;
Hence a Dhamma-guardian thou should'st be!

1027. Hãy kính người nghe nhiều,
Chớ hại điều sở học,
Ðấy cội gốc Phạm hạnh,
Do vậy, hãy trì pháp.

1028. Knowing what comes first and last,
Knowing well the meaning, too,
Skilful in grammar and in other items,
The well-grasped meaning he examines.

1028. Biết câu trước câu sau,
Biết nghĩa, giỏi từ cú,
Nắm giữ điều khéo nắm,
Suy tìm trên nghĩa lý.

1029. Keen in his patient application,
He strives to weigh the meaning well.
At the right time he makes his effort,
And inwardly collects his mind.

1029. Chính nhờ đức kham nhẫn,
Sở nguyện được tác thành,
Sau khi đã tinh tấn,
Vị ấy lại cân nhắc,
Ðúng thời, ra nỗ lực,
Nội tâm khéo định tĩnh.

1034. All the quarters are bedimmed
And the Dhamma is not clear to me,
Indeed my noble friend has gone
And all about seems dark.

1034. Mọi phương đều mờ mịt,
Pháp không khỏi nơi ta,
Người bạn tốt đã đi,
Tối tăm lan tràn khắp.

1035. The friend has passed away,
The Master, too, has gone.
There is no friendship now that equals this:
The mindfulness directed bodywards.

1035. Người bạn đã đi qua,
Ðạo Sư đã đi qua,
Bạn như vậy không còn,
Như quán thân hành niệm.

1036. The old ones now have passed away,
The new ones do no please me much,
Today alone I meditate
Like a bird gone to its nest.

1036. Các vị xưa đã qua,
Vị mới ta không hạp,
Nay một mình ta thiền,
Như chim, khi mưa đến.

1039. Through a full 25 years
As long as I have been in higher training
I have never had a thought of lust:
See, how powerfully the Dhamma works.

1039. Trải hai mươi lăm năm
Ta chỉ là hữu học,
Dục tưởng không khởi lên,
Hãy xem pháp, pháp tánh.

1046. Then was there terror,
and the hair stood up, when he,
The all-accomplished one,
the Buddha, passed away.

1046. Như vậy thật khủng khiếp
Như vậy thật kinh hoàng,
Khi bậc toàn tuyệt hảo,
Bậc Giác ngộ Niết-bàn.

1049. The virtuous, wise man,
The hero strong and ever resolute,
The guardian of the word so true,
Ananda found extinction now.

1049. Ngài là bậc ẩn sĩ,
Với hành vị tuyệt hảo,
Với chánh niệm tuyệt hảo,
Với kiên trì tuyệt hảo,
Thọ trì chân diệu pháp,
Là Trưởng lão A-nan,
Là kho tàng sống động,
Ðầy châu báu ngọc ngà.
